Past Continuous

Le Passé Continu décrit une action qui était en cours à un moment précis du passé. Il se forme avec was/were + verbe-ing. Il est souvent utilisé avec le Passé Simple pour montrer qu'une action en cours a été interrompue par un événement plus court.

QUAND L'UTILISER

Utilisez-le pour une action en cours à un moment précis du passé, pour deux actions passées simultanées, ou quand une action passée plus longue est interrompue par une plus courte (souvent avec "when" ou "while").

STRUCTURE

positiveS + was/were + V-ing

They were playing football all afternoon.

Ils **jouaient** au football tout l'après-midi.

negativeS + wasn't/weren't + V-ing

She wasn't sleeping when I called.

Elle **ne dormait pas** quand j'ai appelé.

questionWas/Were + S + V-ing?

Were you studying at 8 o'clock last night?

**Étudiais**-tu à 8 heures hier soir ?

RÈGLES D'ORTHOGRAPHE (IL/ELLE)

La plupart des verbes	ajouter -ing	play → playing, read → reading
Se termine par -e muet	retirer -e, ajouter -ing	make → making, drive → driving
Verbe court en consonne-voyelle-consonne	doubler la consonne finale + -ing	run → running, sit → sitting

ERREURS COURANTES

I was read when she called.

I was reading when she called.

Le passé continu nécessite was/were + V-ing, pas juste le verbe à la forme de base

While I was studying, she arrived.

While I was studying, she arrived. ✓ (this is correct!)

C'est en fait correct ! "while" + past continuous interrompu par le past simple

Astuce

Rappelez-vous le schéma classique : "I WAS doing X when something happened." Passé continu (was doing) = l'action longue en arrière-plan. Passé simple (happened) = l'action courte qui l'interrompt.
